True we are not yet at Third World levels of dilapidation, but anyone who uses a bicycle here in Kirklees will tell you that our rides would be much more comfortable if there were fewer potholes, ridges and patches. Then the Northern Rail Network is desperately in need of an upgrade, including Lord Adonis's project of providing a lavatory in every station. Public toilets in every town and city would also be a blessing, especially to the elderly. The most urgent project of all is a blast on the building of affordable houses, and local authorities could be permitted to borrow to finance that, and to prepare brown-filed sites in order to make them as attractive to private builders as greenfield sites. Decent funding of our universities to encourage R &D, is desperately needed. One pet project of mine would be the development of wave and tidal power. With all our miles coastline (even if Scotland decides to leave us) we should be world leaders in these. It ain't perfect but it isn't falling apart.

Much of it was reconstructed during the Blair/Brown years. Blair/Brown borrowed money when it was pricier than today to pay interest and they bought into PFI -- which I will not defend.

I'd be gloriously happy for government to announce a Keynesian bucket, if I knew what the bucket might deliver.
