More from "Bridges, not Borders" (see previous post.)
Lift up your eyes unto the hills:
"Open borders would make the world a richer place .
A study* by economist Michael Clemens shows how opening the world's borders could as much as double global GDP.
That's because immigrants aren't just workers, they also create jobs and contribute to society .
Of course, the economic value of a human being should never be the basis for allowing them to exercise the right to move.
And despite economic growth being a problematic measure of wellbeing , we can at least be re-assured that the world’s economy wouldn't collapse under a system of open borders.
In fact it could have an equalising effect on global wealth distribution."
Yes, i know this all sounds a bit utopian, but it indicates the direction in which a progressive government with a vision should be taking us. Pandering to populist politics is taking us in the wrong direction.

could as much as double global GDP
ReplyDeleteThis doesn’t seem implausible (we know free trade raises global GDP so free movement might too).
But even if true, it’s hardly relevant. As an inhabitant of Britain, why would I care what happens to global GDP? I only care what happens to Britain’s GDP per-head. If free movement of people would cause global GDP to rise, but cause GDP per head in Britain to fall, then rationally, as an inhabitant of Britain, I should oppose it, right?
Does the report address that?
Rationally I welcome it. That's what the World Development Movement (predecessor of GJN) was all about and I've been campaigning with them for over 6o years. I'm quite happy to have less so that the desperate can have enough.
DeleteAnother possibility is that it’s a sort of Prisoner’s Dilemma situation, where if every country were to agree total free movement at the same time then everyone would benefit, but if only some countries do then those countries will do worst relative to the ones which remain controlled.
ReplyDeleteSure, total agreement would be best.
